What Japan's economic profile is telling you

Japan remains one of the world's largest economies, but the dollar value of its output can move noticeably with the yen. That is why nominal GDP in current US dollars and real GDP growth are both shown: they answer different questions.

Real GDP growth returned to positive territory in 2025 after a small contraction in 2024. At the same time, services account for just over seven-tenths of value added, while agriculture is about 1% of GDP.

Why nominal and real GDP can tell different stories

Nominal GDP measured in US dollars reflects domestic output, prices and exchange-rate movements. Real GDP growth is designed to track inflation-adjusted changes in production instead.

Why the debt number needs a definition

The 236.7% figure shown here is general government gross debt as a share of GDP. Narrower measures, including bonds-only figures, are not directly interchangeable with it.
